Examination Laws

The information sheet on examination law (possibly a more up-to-date version in TU4U) should answer the most common questions on exam laws; here are a few more explanations:

  • The authority responsible for study law matters at the TU is usually the Dean of Studies, whereas at the KFU it is the chair of the respective Curriculum Commission. It is best to contact the respective dean's office.
  • The authority responsible for study law matters at the TU is usually the Dean of Studies, whereas at the KFU it is the chair of the respective Curriculum Commission. It is best to contact the respective dean's office.
  • The exercise mode and thus also the grading scale may not be changed during the exercise/during the semester. If this is absolutely necessary due to some external circumstances, you have the right to withdraw from the course without getting a grade.

Deficiencies in grading

What constitutes a serious deficiency in the grading process cannot be described in general terms and must be clarified by a case-by-case basis. If you find that your exam or the process had a serious deficiency, go to the exam inspection and get a copy of your exam and the exam protocol. The best way to do this is to come to us or your student union (StV, german: Studienvertretung). We will be happy to advise you on whether your case is a serious deficiency.

If this is the case, you can lodge an objection with Student Services within four weeks of being notified of the assessment. If this is granted, your examination is absolutely null and void. This means that the grade will be revoked and you will not lose an exam attempt.

Of course, an assessment can only take place if you have also submitted a performance. So if you didn't show up for the exam, you have no “right” to a certificate. The worst thing that can happen to you is that you will be blocked from taking the exam for the next exam date or the next 8 weeks.

If you have actually received a certificate, contact the examiner responsible and politely ask them to cancel the grade.

In the case of exercises, partial performances can already lead to an assessment.

First of all, take a deep breath, it's not that bad!

You've already taken the first step and reached us. We will be happy to help you navigate the bureaucracy. It is not difficult, here is the process:

In order to take a board examination, you have to fill in the relevant form and hand it in to the secretariat of the institute where the course is taking place. On the form, YOU enter the place, time and your proposal for the commission. At the last possible start, the Dean of Studies is in any case the chairperson of the committee. The Dean's Office and the Dean of Studies will now decide on your application. If the place, time or persons are unavailable, a new date will be found in consultation with you. As soon as the date and the committee have been approved by you or the Dean of Studies, the dates are fixed by signature.

Bureaucracy done!

Now it is important to prepare properly for the exam. Use the office hours of the course director. Ask questions and show that you are really interested. If you notice that the situation is causing you psychological distress, use the counseling center for students or one of the counseling services offered by the HTU Graz.

On the day of the exam, you will appear before the commission and put your knowledge to the test. In most cases, the exam consists of a written part followed by an oral part. The subject matter may not deviate from that of the course. At the end of the exam, the committee will have a brief discussion and you will receive your grade immediately afterwards.

In the case of purely written board examinations, only the grade is awarded by a committee within a period of four weeks.

All information on board examinations is also summarized in this document (english Version).

Counting of examination attempts in the event of curriculum changes

If one of the following properties of the course or the course details change, this results in a new course or a new equality node:

  •    changed course type,
  •  changed semester hours/contact hours,
  •  changed ECTS credits,
  •  changed course content.

As a result, the counting of examination attempts starts from zero again.

Other changes (e.g. change of course title without change of content, semester, language of instruction, etc.) do not result in a new course.
