Chair and Finance

Every year at the seminar, we elect a new chairperson and two people responsible for the cost centers. The chairperson does not have to be the same person as the official StV chairperson, since each of us contributes and the work should not rest on one person! The cost center managers are responsible for the finances. They keep track of expenses and are officially authorized to manage the budget. Since we are at two universities, we usually have two cost center managers!

Chairpersons: Stefanie Strobl & Helene Höcher

Cost center manager at TU: Finn Strebel

Cost center manager at KF: Veronika Schlatzer

Mandates of the student representative

Our mandates (affectionately known as “mandarins”) are elected every two years by all physics students in the ÖH elections. Formally, they represent the students, but in practice they have no special privileges over other BaGru members. Since we operate on basisdemocratic principles, everyone is equal here—every vote counts equally, whether you’re elected or not.

Modules

Events

In addition to the well-known physics “Festl” and the EsTut, the BaGru organizes a wide variety of other events. Whether it’s engaging discussions at the PhysTalks, relaxed chats over coffee and cake at our open house, or a lively atmosphere at our game nights—there’s something for everyone.
These examples offer just a small glimpse into the diverse program of events that the BaGru plans and carries out with great dedication.

Festl

The Festl Crew makes sure there’s plenty of fun to be had during your studies. Among other things, we organize the mulled wine stand, the spritz stand, and the annual “Grillfest”. Every year, we host the “Bürstl und Wir” welcome party for our first-year students, where new students have the chance to network with one another.

IT

The IT team makes sure that all the technical systems run smoothly. Whether it’s a broken aquarium pump, the collection of past exam questions, or the Discord server—the IT team is always there to help. You often don’t realize just how much technology is actually involved in BaGru until something goes wrong.

Starting Your Studies

The “Starting Your Studies” module is designed to make the transition into university as smooth as possible for prospective students. We place a special emphasis on participating in popular events such as “TdoT,” “Welcome Weeks,” and “StudierenProbieren,” as well as supporting first-year students through first-year students tutorials and counseling sessions. Do you have questions? Do you feel overwhelmed by all the planning and organization at the start of your studies? We’re always here to listen! :)

Manager: Stefan Köfler

Members:

  • First-Year Student's Tutorial: Markus Rappold, Thomas Hutter, Maximilian Schuster, Paul Klösch, Maja Buchegger, Leo Orgel, Maya Dreisibner, Miriam Nuster
  • Inscriptions-/HighSchool Graduates Consulting, Study Guide und StudierenProbieren: Michael Bitzan, Stefanie Strobl, Thomas Hutter, Fabian Dixer, Finn Strebel, Stella Thurner, Kilian Klusemann

Field of Expertise

We define “Fields of Expertise” as areas of activity that require less administrative effort but benefit greatly from the exchange of knowledge. One example is the committees: here, we represent students’ interests in various roles. In this way, we help shape decisions such as how a new curriculum is designed or who is appointed to a professorship.
To make it easier to get started with committee work, experienced contacts are available who are also consistently supported by the collective wisdom of the Bagru :)

Habilitation-, Appointment-, and Selection Committees

In these committees, students have a say and influence teaching over many years.
Habilitation Committee: Granting teaching authorization to prospective professors in their field. Once authorized, they are eligible to supervise master’s theses and doctoral students.
Appointment Committee: Professors (from Priv. Doz. to Univ. Prof.) are appointed to the university by an appointment committee.
Selection Committee/Tenure track positions: “Junior professorship.” Ultimately, the applicant receives, for example, the title of Assistant Professor (Ass. Prof.).

Further Responsibilities

The role of the BaGru archivists is to take an interest in old photographs and records and to preserve them. The archivist is also responsible for passing on old accounts of experiences to prevent past mistakes from being repeated. Furthermore, it is the archivist’s ultimate responsibility to ensure that enough photographs are taken and that records are complete!

Responsible: Michael Steiner, Maximilian Schuster, Barbara Millonig

Being in charge of the aquarium means feeding the fish, changing the water, removing algae, cleaning, and deciding on the visual design. We take care of the smallest inhabitants of our BaGru ecosystem🐠 In short: We’re here for the fish! ;)

Responsible: Florian Kametriser, Alexandra Geishüttner, Eve Losbichler, Michael Steiner

At the University of Graz, the Institute of Physics is part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences (NaWi). The Faculty Representation (FV) serves as a link between the individual student representatives (StVen) and the Higher Education Institution Representation (ÖH-Chair). Its responsibilities include, among other things, appointing student representatives to various committees, managing its own budget, and organizing faculty-wide projects such as the NaWi Fest.

Responsible: Stefanie Strobl, Yannis Marx

So that even those who otherwise never get a voice can have one, they are given a voice through the Object Representative. Whenever the duration and mood of the meeting allow it, an object is nominated by the Object Representative to be named.

Responsible: Jakob Reitbauer

We also have to handle mail and emails. For example, we respond to inquiries sent to the BaGru and ensure that various announcements (Student Assitant positions, summer schools, external job openings, etc.) are updated on the bulletin board and the website.

Emails: Alexandra Geishüttner, Felix Halbwedl, Marin Kasalo, Stefanie Strobl, Jakob Reitbauer

Mail: Stefanie Strobl (KFU), Eve Losbichler (TU)

We’re the team behind Physicist-Merch, and we put our heart and soul into the design and production. That’s how we bring a touch of the Physicist spirit to T-shirts, mugs, and more—stylishly, creatively, and with a passion for what we do :)

Responsible: Maria Shtayn, Michael Bitzan, Fabian Dixer, Helene Höcher, Sabrina Pfeffer, Maja Buchegger

The plants also require care and attention!

Responsible: – (TU), – (KF)

The minute-takers record all important details during meetings—who says what, what decisions are made, and what tasks need to be completed. The reports are then reviewed for errors and sensitive passages before being published on the website.

Responsible: Felix Halbwedl, Stefanie Strobl, Maya Dreisiebner, Eve Losbichler (Corrector)

Replacement: Miriam Nuster

The networking people maintain the BaGru’s contacts with StVen, HTU, and ÖH, as personal connections facilitate communication. In addition, they represent the BaGru nationally and internationally through ZAPF (Association of All Physics Student Representatives—representatives of physics in German-speaking countries), ZÖPF (Association of Austrian Physics Student Representatives—all physics student councils in Austria), and IAPS (International Association of Physics Students), thereby networking with physics students both domestically and abroad.

Responsible: Robert Schwarzl, Sabrina Michlmayer, Yannis Marx, Michael Jöbstl, Stefanie Strobl, Michael Steiner, Felix Halbwedl, Eve Losbichler, Raphael Ostermann

The catering team makes sure that the BaGru is always stocked with coffee, milk, Murelli, and exam-beer. To do this, they place regular orders and keep an eye on inventory levels. This role is especially well-suited for new members who want to actively contribute to the group’s atmosphere and camaraderie ;)
