Content: The term “predatory publishing” is quickly at hand when it comes to questionable practices in scholarly communication. However, a concrete definition is not so easy, because a closer look reveals that there is a large number of unfair or sometimes even clumsy practices. In this workshop you will learn which criteria you can use to evaluate publishers, journals, and conferences in order to (eventually) label them as outright fraudulent, misleading/deceptive, or perhaps just as questionable or even of good quality. This will help you both in deciding where to publish and in your literature searches.

+++ Oikos Talks +++

Have you ever thought about what your phone has to do with climate change?

Sadly, everyday tech products, such as phones or computers contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, resource overuse and the electronic waste problem. This makes them an important part to consider when working on the mitigation of these issues. Despite the size of these difficulties, most people have rarely thought about what they can contribute to bring a change to this situation.

But there are things that you can do!

Buying eco-friendly produced or refurbished products, letting them be repaired or avoiding electronic waste where possible are easy and comfortable ways to live more sustainably!

You want to know more about the topic? Then join us for our online oikos Talk #2: Tech products & sustainability!

We invited experts from research and industry who are dealing with the issue on a daily basis to join our panel of speakers. We are going to discuss concrete ways to lower the negative consequences of our tech products, to find out more about the impact of tech products on the environment in general and what needs to be done to transform the industry.

When? March 30, 7 pm

Where? Your living room – join us online via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2032032203

PhD Union Seminar

Before going into our summer break our PhD Union Team met for the yearly PhD Union seminar.

We finished small tasks that somehow always get overlooked throughout the year. We thoroughly discussed how we want to shape our future work. And of course we also had ample time of food and fun in between as well as afterwards in the evening. 😄

We, the PhD Union, wish you a wonderful summer and are looking forward to seeing you again in Autumn! 🤗

International Days 2021

Have you been thinking about going abroad as part of your studies for some time now? Do you keep asking yourself the following questions: Where? When? For how long? What opportunities are there at all?

During the International Days 2021 from Tuesday, 19 October to Thursday, 21 October at Graz University of Technology, there will be various opportunities to get information, ask open questions and network with students who are currently doing a semester abroad or are doing their exchange at Graz University of Technology.

Meeting Point Dissertation

What is it like doing a PhD? How can one stay motivated and focussed even when everything seems to go wrong? How many publications do I have to write and how can I be paid for my work? These and many other pressing questions were answered during “Meeting Point Dissertation” on September the 29th, which was attended by 140 PhDs – in person and virtually. We were blown away by the great discussion we had and the amount of relevant information which was packed into each presentation! We thank all the speakers, especially former PhDs Christian Knoll and Gundelinde Wiegel for sharing their life experience with us and for patiently answering a ton of questions! Another big thank you goes out to the Human Resource Development Department for organising this smooth event with our support!

Start of Studies

This page should help you to start your doctoral studies at TU Graz. You can find all details under:

https://www.tugraz.at/studium/studienangebot/doktoratsstudien/ueberblick-doktoratsstudien/

0. Suitable Study Segree

You need a master's degree or equivalent in the field in which you want to earn a doctorate. In Austria, there is also the possibility to start a doctorate after a bachelor's degree. More information about this "fast track" option can be found in the curriculum and in the University Act (§ 64 Abs. 5).

1. Finding a supervisor

There are two ways to find a topic and a supervisor:

  1. You can apply to an open position (university assistant, project assistant or an industry position). In this case, the topic of the dissertation is already given.
  2. If you have a specific topic in mind, you can try to find a supervisor yourself who is willing to supervise the thesis..

Once you have found a professor who is willing to supervise your work, you need a confirmation of supervision. Without this you cannot enroll for the doctoral program!

Each professor belongs to a specific Doctoral School, depending on their field (physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, ...). Usually you enroll in the same DocSchool.

2. Admission to doctoral studies

After you have found a subject and a supervisor, it is time to contact the Student Services to find out which documents you need for registration. For the enrollment you have to appear in person at the Studienservice.

At Graz University of Technology, two different titles are offered for the doctorate: Dr. techn. (Doctor of Technical Sciences) or Dr. rer. nat. (Doctor of Natural Sciences). You have to choose one of them when you enroll. The curriculum for both is identical except for the title, so it is a purely cosmetic decision.

3. Education agreement

After registration you should receive your account for TUGrazOnline, with which you can also access the internal platform TU4U. There you will find all necessary information during your studies.

Now you need the so-called training agreement between you and your supervisor. This should contain the following points:

  • which DocSchool you belong to
  • the working title of your dissertation
  • a short description of your project
  • the confirmation of this project by your supervisor and the dean of studies.

How such a training agreement should look like is described in more detail in TU4U.

4. Welcome to the Doctoral Studies!

In order to record your work progress, you have to write a progress report every year. Details can be found in TU4U as well as under the menu item "My doctoral studies" on your business card in TUGrazOnline.

If you have questions, problems or any other concerns during your doctoral studies, don't hesitate to contact us! Maybe you have an idea for a great event or would like to actively shape your studies? Then just send us an email and drop by our next meeting!
